About This Service
Cold and Fresh water Tanks
Cold water and freshwater tanks are often the first aquarium someone keeps. A goldfish tank bought for a child, a community tank set up in the living room, a simple unheated setup that has been running for years. They are easy to underestimate because they look straightforward. But a freshwater tank that is not looked after properly still suffers from poor water quality, overstocked conditions, algae problems and sick fish, exactly the same as any other aquarium. AquariumCraft provides cold water and freshwater aquarium maintenance for homes and businesses across North West London. We visit on a schedule that works for you, carry out a thorough service on every appointment and keep the tank in the kind of condition it should be in. We work with all types of freshwater setup. Goldfish tanks, fancy goldfish displays, community tropical tanks, single-species setups, native species tanks and unheated planted aquariums. Each one has different requirements and we deal with them accordingly. Cold water tanks are not a lesser version of the hobby. A well-kept goldfish tank with healthy fish and clean water is genuinely satisfying to own. If yours has seen better days, or you simply do not have the time to keep on top of it, we can take that off your plate. We cover Harrow, Barnet, Wembley, Finchley, Brent and the wider North West London area.

Who This Service Is For
This service works well for a wide range of fish keepers across North West London.
Goldfish Owners
Goldfish produce more waste than most people expect and need proper filtration and regular water changes to stay healthy. We keep on top of this so your fish thrive.
Families with Children
The tank was set up for the children and is now your responsibility. We come in, keep it healthy and make sure the fish are cared for regardless of how interested anyone is in it.
Schools and Community Spaces
Freshwater tanks in North West London schools, libraries, GP surgeries and community centres. Scheduled visits carried out at a time that suits the premises.
New Tank Owners
Just set up a freshwater tank and not confident yet with the routine. We visit regularly and explain what good water quality looks and smells like so you build knowledge over time.
How It Works
Get in Touch
When you get in touch we ask a few straightforward questions. Tank size, what fish you keep, how long it has been running and what maintenance has been done recently. If the tank has been neglected or is in poor condition, that is fine. We assess it fully on the first visit.
First Visit and Full Assessment
On the first visit we carry out a full assessment. We test the water, inspect the filter and equipment, look at the fish and note anything that needs attention. We agree a maintenance schedule from there based on the size of the tank, the number of fish and how quickly things build up.
We Agree a Maintenance Schedule
Most cold water and freshwater tanks do well with a visit every 4 weeks. Heavily stocked goldfish tanks or tanks with known water quality issues may benefit from fortnightly visits at least initially. We give you a recommendation based on what we see, not a blanket rule.
Regular Visits With Written Summaries
On each routine visit we carry out the full service. We bring everything we need. After every visit we leave a brief written summary of what was done and what the water parameters were so you always have a clear record of the tank's condition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do goldfish really need professional tank maintenance?
Goldfish are often thought of as low-maintenance but they are actually heavy waste producers relative to their size. A common goldfish can grow to 30cm or more and produces a substantial amount of ammonia that the filter has to process constantly. In an undersized or poorly maintained tank, water quality deteriorates faster than most owners realise. Professional maintenance ensures the water chemistry stays within safe levels, the filter is functioning properly and the fish are not under chronic low-level stress that shortens their lifespan significantly.
How is a cold water tank different to maintain compared to a tropical tank?
The core maintenance tasks are very similar. Water changes, filter servicing, glass cleaning and parameter testing apply to both. The main difference is that cold water tanks do not have a heater, so temperature is less controlled and can fluctuate more with the seasons. Cold water fish such as goldfish are generally more tolerant of parameter swings than tropical fish, but this does not mean they are immune to poor water quality. The absence of a heater is also one less piece of equipment to check, but filtration in a goldfish tank usually needs to be more robust because of the higher waste load.
How often does a freshwater tank need a water change?
For most freshwater setups, a partial water change of around 25 to 30 percent every 2 weeks is a reasonable baseline. Heavily stocked tanks, goldfish tanks and tanks with live plants that are not balanced may need more frequent changes. The right frequency depends on what the water parameters are actually doing between visits. We test on every visit and adjust the schedule if we see nitrates climbing faster than they should. There is no single answer that is correct for every tank, which is why testing matters rather than following a fixed routine without checking the results.
Can you help if my freshwater tank has gone cloudy or green?
Yes. Cloudy or green water is one of the most common problems in freshwater tanks and it usually has a straightforward cause once the water is tested properly. New tank syndrome, a bacterial bloom, an algae outbreak or a struggling filter are the most common reasons. We come out, test the water, identify what is actually causing the problem and deal with it. We will also tell you what changes to make going forward to stop it recurring, because the same conditions that caused it the first time will cause it again if nothing changes.
My fish look healthy but the tank smells. Is that normal?
A healthy, well-maintained aquarium should have very little smell. A noticeable odour coming from the tank usually means something is decaying inside it, organic matter on the substrate, a dead fish that has not been noticed, or a filter that is not processing waste efficiently. It can also indicate that the tank is overstocked for the size of the filtration. We investigate the cause on the visit and deal with whatever we find. In most cases it is resolved during the same appointment.
